One of the popular cafe delis in Singapore, Berthold Delikatessen, operates within Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski (13 Stamford Road).
The German delicatessen concept by Kempinski Hotels has been open to customers in Singapore since December 2018, and serves a range of authentic and fresh luxury treats, to go or for eating within the premises.
Inspired by traditional German delicatessen and sophisticated European style cafés, the deli’s name is a tribute to the Kempinski hotel chain’s founder, Berthold Kempinski.
Before he became a luxury hotelier, Berthold (and his wife, Helene), operated a deli in Berlin, Germany, in the late 1800s.
Always dedicated to pleasing the customers, Berthold offered Berliners a selection of lobsters, oysters, caviar and other delicacies, selling them in half portions to make these luxury goods more affordable – the store was an immediate success.
Singapore’s deli is directly inspired by Mr Kempinski’s original shop in Berlin, and has kept the German accent with the name spelt with a “k”. Symbol of the shop is a red moustache, another nod to the founder.
You can find the German delicatessen on the ground floor of Arcade @ Capitol Kempinski, with the option to either sit indoors, within the main restaurant; or outdoors, for a more alfresco feel, or at the mezzanine level for a bird’s eye view that’s perfect for people-watching.
The menu contains great choices for a light delicatessen lunch, an assortment of German sandwiches and salads, pastries, seasonal specialities, plus Berthold’s fragrant coffees of German or local blend.
