Founded by in Yan Zhi in 2013 in Hubei, China (and in Singapore since February 2021), the Chinese-themed upscale bookshop brings together books, a café restaurant, an art gallery, a craft store, and events space – as an all-in-one literary lifestyle destination over two levels.
The bookstore is a wonderful gateway into the world of rich Chinese history and culture with a range of over 30,000 books on Chinese literature, humanities, history, and philosophy from China and Taiwan – featuring adult and children’s books from international bestsellers, Chinese authors and foreign literary works.
Around 80 percent of the literary works available are from China & Taiwan and in Chinese, with the rest including mostly high-profile English-language books.
As you step into the first floor of the bookstore, you’ll be greeted by calligraphic elements of black & white, inspired by the essence of the Jiangnan watertown, with an extensive range of children’s books as one of the first collections to browse through.
The 1st floor also has a multifunctional public reading area that holds literary events from new book releases to reading events, as well as a cafe providing a comfortable, quiet space to read and enjoy a variety of delicious coffee blends, Chinese Chu teas, and Taiwanese teas.
Entering the second floor via a spiral staircase, you can appreciate the well-designed circular arch, which extends from the second floor to the first, a bridge-like design where inspiration was taken from Chinese contemporary painter Wu Guanzhong’s Landscape of Jiangnan water towns.
The second floor houses the bookstore’s Adults’ section, a place you can hunt for classic and modern Chinese books, plus sections for cultural creatives and stationery ideas for art & design lovers.
One of the showcase features on the 2nd floor is the shop’s art gallery, providing a cultural change in scenery as the space showcases collection of creative artworks and thought-provoking paintings by Singapore’s local talents and international artists.
Overall, beyond Chinese books, the bookstore provides an experiential journey to the Chinese culture through their regular events from book launches and reading events, to Chinese painting, poetry and calligraphy, being a serious must-visit on any literary tour in Singapore.
